On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen were on the Kent State college campus to maintain order during a student protest against the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. For a still unknown reason, the National Guard suddenly fired upon the already dispersing crowd of student protesters, killing four and wounding nine others. Nixon Promises Peace in Vietnam During the 1968 U.S. presidential campaign, candidate Richard Nixon ran with a platform that promised peace with honor for the Vietnam War. Longing for an honorable end to the war, Americans voted Nixon into office and then watched and waited for Nixon to fulfill his campaign promise. Until the end of April 1970, Nixon seemed to be doing just that. However, on April 30, 1970, President Nixon announced during a television speech to the nation that American forces had invaded Cambodia. Although Nixon stated in his speech that the invasion was a defensive response to the aggression of North Vietnamese into Cambodia and that this action was meant to quicken the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, many Americans saw this new invasion as an expansion or lengthening of the Vietnam War. In response to Nixons announcement of a new invasion, students across the United States began to protest. Students Begin a Protest Protests by students at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio began on May 1, 1970. At noon, students held a protest rally on campus and later that night rioters built a bonfire and threw beer bottles at police off campus. The mayor declared a state of emergency and asked the governor for help. The governor sent in the Ohio National Guard. On May 2, 1970, during a protest near the ROTC building on campus, someone set fire to the abandoned building. The National Guard entered the campus and used tear gas to control the crowd. During the evening of May 3, 1970, another protest rally was held on campus, which was again dispersed by the National Guard. All of these protests led up to the deadly interaction between Kent State students and the National Guard on May 4, 1970, which is known as the Kent State Shootings or the Kent State Massacre. The Kent State Shootings On May 4, 1970, another student rally was scheduled for noon at the Commons on the Kent State University campus. Before the rally began, the National Guard ordered those congregated to disperse. Since the students refused to leave, the National Guard attempted to use tear gas on the crowd. Because of the shifting wind, the tear gas was ineffective at moving the crowd of students. The National Guard then advanced upon the crowd, with bayonets attached to their rifles. This scattered the crowd. After dispersing the crowd, the National Guardsmen stood around for about ten minutes and then turned around and began to retrace their steps. For an unknown reason, during their retreat, nearly a dozen National Guardsmen suddenly turned around and began firing at the still scattered students. In 13 seconds, 67 bullets were fired. Some claim that there was a verbal order to fire. Aftermath of the Shooting Four students were killed and nine others were wounded. Some of the students who were shot were not even part of the rally, but were just walking to their next class. The Kent State massacre angered many and incited additional protests at schools across the country. Knowledge isn’t all about what people know or how well they are in school. Int Task 3-Toilet Paper Experiment Paper INT Task 3: Toilet Paper Absorbency Project Design Plan Problem Statement: Absorbency of toilet paper is found in many aspects when it comes to choosing the right toilet paper. When choosing toilet paper people base their decisions on many factors. Those factors include price, name brand, availability, quantity for the price, and even media deliverance (i. e. commercials) of toilet paper. Although these factors are of key importance, what about the absorbency of toilet paper? This experiment is conducted in the hopes of showing three different levels of absorbency. Testable Question: How does the saturation of three different brands of toilet paper compare? Literature Review: Based off two previous scientific experiments that were found, the results mirrored each other. Both experiments took multiple sheets of toilet paper and applied a controlled amount of liquid to each brand, in which the absorbency was recorded based off the brand. What was found is that the more expensive brand required less sheets to be used in terms of absorbency against the off brand toilet papers that were used in the experiments. It would appear that although the better toilet paper is more expensive, it is a better value due to having to use fewer sheets. (Dunbar, 2008) (Katwith6lives, 2010). Experimental Design The experiment will use three different brands of toilet paper. They are Charmin, White Cloud, and a local store brand paper. The experiment will start off by using fifteen sheets of each brand, that will be placed on top of saran wrap, and apply 3mL of green dyed water to each stack of toilet paper. The independent variable will be the amount of water used during each test run, which will be 3mL. Last, the controlled variable will be the amount of time used to test the level of saturation for each test run, which will be 15 seconds for each brand of toilet paper, a stop watch will be used to ensure accuracy. To reduce the threats to internal validity, the name brand will not sway the experiment and make the tester think the better brand will be the most absorbent. Each toilet paper stack will be treated as if they are all the same brand. Other factors that will not be considered are price, availability, softness of toilet paper or quantity within each package. Also, the outcome of each test run will not assumed due to previous test runs, that is, assuming that the toilet paper that performed best in terms of saturation in previous tests will perform at the same level. The relationship between the independent variable, amount of water used, and the dependent variable, the reduction of toilet paper, gives this experiment the ability to easily show the saturation of each brand of toilet paper and well as the unsaturated aspect of each brand of toilet paper. Hypothesis: The absorbency of toilet paper must be in direct relation to the quality of such said toilet paper. The absorbency of toilet paper does not have any impact on price, name brand, availability or the amount of toilet paper used. This hypothesis was derived due to the outside influence consumers’ encounter from name brand, ord of mouth or media deliverance of toilet paper. It is predicted that Charmin would be the most absorbent in terms of saturation due to its thickness. This experimental design was used due to its ease of others being able to follow up with this experiment, whether it is with different brands of toilet paper, different saturation methods or length of time used during saturation. This experiment opens up other objects for easy testing by using the same materials, but just not toilet paper every time. In terms of validity, an experiment would need a testable hypothesis, the ability for statistical data and the end results that bring it back to the beginning when the hypothesis was first rendered. The Georgia Institute of Technology’s Library is a research institution located in Atlanta Georgia. The prestigious academic library is an integral hub for science and engineering students from around the globe. From its small origins in a one room classroom and only one librarian in 1901; the library officially opened its doors in 1907.As of 2014, the library now requires a large staff of 136-150 employees, in order to maintain the academic library. The materials budget varies from $4,000,000 to $6,818,190. A huge portion is spent on periodicals and databases. A portion of the budget, around $250,000 is deviated for monograph or books. A wealth of resources and imperative information, the library’s approximate collection for titles is 1,061,206; volumes is 2,537,869 (including 248,580 e-books).In 2012, 9,229 volumes have been acquired. I spoke to two different Heads of Acquisitions at GA Tech. First I spoke to Tom Fisher; he has been employed at the GA Tech library for 22yrs. Initially he worked in circulations, now he works in monograph (books) acquisitions as the Assistant Head of Acquisitions Serials. He is responsible for the purchase of monographs and standing orders; receives and processes purchase requests. I also conducted a web interview with Elizabeth Winter, the Assistant Department Head E-resources Coordinator. Both of them provided profound insight into academic acquisitions.
